If you live in the Highlands of Camas or the hills of Washougal, you know that the view comes with a challenge: gravity. Designing a driveway, patio, or walkway on a steep slope isn't just about aesthetics; it’s about specialized engineering to ensure your investment doesn't shift, crack, or wash away during a standard Washington winter.

At SMV Concrete, we’ve mastered the "Highland Pour." Here is how we tackle the unique topography of East Clark County.

The Foundation: Sub-Grade and Compaction

On a flat lot in Vancouver, site prep is straightforward. On a Camas hillside, it’s the most critical step. We utilize heavy-duty compaction and deep gravel bases to ensure the ground beneath your concrete is rock-solid. Without this, the heavy rainfall common in the Columbia River Gorge can erode the soil under your slab, leading to "voids" and eventual collapse.

Managing Runoff with Integrated Drainage

Water is the enemy of concrete. On a slope, runoff gains speed and volume. We don't just pour the slab; we design a Drainage Solution (internal note: link to replacement or a drainage-specific section) that protects your home. This often includes:

  • Trench Drains: To catch water at the bottom of a steep driveway.

  • Custom Grading: Ensuring a 2% "cross-slope" so water moves off the side of the slab rather than racing down the middle.

  • Retaining Walls: To create level "tiers" for patios or parking pads.

Low-Slump Concrete: The Secret to a Perfect Finish

Pouring concrete on a steep incline requires a specific "recipe." We use low-slump concrete, which is a thicker, stiffer mix. Standard "wet" concrete would simply slide down the hill before it could set. By using a stiffer mix and reinforcing it with heavy-duty steel, we can achieve a flawless Broom or Stamped Finish even on significant grades.

The "Tiered" Approach

Sometimes, a single flat slab isn't the answer. For many homeowners in Washougal, we recommend a "terraced" design. By integrating Retaining Walls, we can turn a useless hillside into a functional, multi-level outdoor living space. This not only adds square footage to your usable yard but significantly boosts your property value.

Live on a hill? Don't trust your hillside project to a "flat-land" contractor. SMV Concrete has the specialized equipment and experience to build safely on the steepest terrain in Camas and Washougal.
